Marquise Technologies at NAB 2018: Advanced Mastering & Versioning 
Enabling efficient deliveries of premium content in HDR and IMF.


Geneva, April 3rd 2018 - Marquise Technologies again steps forward by offering producers of premium episodic and feature films in UHD and 4K HDR the widest and most complete palette of tools for creating the masters and their multiple versions.

Presenting dedicated products for each of the post-production processes, the company’s product range permits scalable investments and a better distribution of the workload among their teams:

  • MIST, for mastering & versioning

  • ICE, the reference player for quality control

  • TORNADO, for automated transcoding and versioning


Marquise Technologies’ solutions support all existing HDR types: HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG and ST-2094-10.

Dolby Vision certified - MIST is now certified for Dolby Vision Packaging and Quality Control, allowing the user to master Dolby Vision graded content into a scene-referred ACES format and in a display-referred PQ encoded IMF or iTunes package. The CMU is also supported, permitting the artistic intent to be reproduced as faithfully as possible on all devices, HDR and SDR. Packaging capabilities of MIST allows the dynamic review of the Dolby Vision metadata, and also their recreation following a modification in the content.

DMCVT (Dynamic Metadata Color Volume Transform) support has been extended to include ST 2094-40 and ST 2094-10 for transporting the metadata into IMF and HEVC. In addition, for ST 2094-10 MIST and ICE simulate the result of the tone mapping algorithm, permitting the review and the modification of the content at the mastering stage, in preparation of a broadcast compliant to ATSC 3.0 norms.

HDR Analysis Module and Reporting - In order to verify HDR content, new measurements have been added to the analysis of the MAX FALL and MAX CLL: live nit level display with pixel picker using the Luminance meter and out of luminance settings in Zebra mode are completing the set of video monitoring tools that already exist in MIST & ICE, like the Histogram, the Waveform with support for ST 2084 and the Vectorscope with HDR graticules, readouts and a CIE chromaticity diagram presenting the color distribution within the boundaries of the color space. The HDR analysis can be exported as a PDF report and an XML file, ready to be packaged in IMF as a side-car.

The confidence in these analysis tools are reinforced by unique features like the remote control of the mastering display for Canon and Eizo devices, MIST and ICE send command directly to the monitor to display the right color settings (color space, EOTF, luminance levels…) providing sureness in the image displayed, and the Video Pipeline Active Diagram of MIST, giving instantaneous feedback on the modifications applied on the source content: color space conversions or resolution changes, video output information, and also specific devices connected like the Dolby Vision CMU are displayed in real-time.


After the world premiere in the support of IMF RDD45 ProRes last year, MIST is today the only mastering system able to create OPLs (Output Profile Lists) as required by the ST2067-101 standard, and among them the OPL Presets and Audio routing macros.

MIST and TORNADO are already fully compliant with the coming specification IMF for Broadcast & Online, which requests the support of the ST 2067-9 Sidecar Composition Map and the OPL Preset for AS-11 X1 UHD Air Master Delivery.

Capabilities to master HDR IMF content are enriched with the support of ST 2067-200, for embedding the DMCVT tracks in an IMF package.

These advanced features, combined with the most extensive support of standard IMF Applications, including new App #5 ACES, App #4 Cinema Mezzanine and App #2/2e Studio Profiles are making of MIST, ICE and TORNADO the tools of reference for advanced IMF mastering & QC.


MIST continues to be a tool of choice for SMPTE DCP mastering and has added the support of Dolby Cinema and Éclair Color for HDR projections.


This NAB 2018 version of MIST presents an enhanced user interface for the creation of the deliveries, helping the operator in this process. MIST integrates the naming conventions of major Studios & OTTs directly in the delivery templates, including for now Fox, Disney and Netflix.

These delivery templates are regularly updated, and are available in the UMD panel (for Unified Master Delivery): the UMD is a dedicated interface allowing the creation of deliverables requiring specific packaging and metadata in an automated way. Using the UMD is also extremely useful for rewrapping existing packages into another format without re-encoding the video tracks. As an example, an iTunes package or an MKV ProRes can be instantly created from an IMF RDD45 ProRes source, just as an IMF App 2e can be versioned for a QT JPEG2000 delivery. The rewrapping not only saves hours of encoding time, but also avoids additional quality control passes, since the video is not modified.

Formats available in the UMD include today Apple iTunes HDR10 and Dolby Vision, AS02/AS10/AS11-DPP, MXF J2K op1a Fox/HBO, QT JPG2000, MXF ProRes, MKV JPEG2000 & ProRes (YouTube), Disney & Netflix DSM and Fox ISR & ISM.

ISAN & EIDR numbering and unique identifier systems are now integrated in MIST at the root of the project. Each level has its correspondence in a MIST Project, from the top level (project) to all the different versions, represented in MIST by the compositions. Once it is referenced in the composition, the number is automatically embedded if required by the type of delivery, could it be an IMF, an iTunes package or an AS-11 DPP deliverable, saving time and typing errors for the operator.
